Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha Raptor CDI box, raptor 660, rev limiter

Question
I was riding my Raptor 660 the other night and it stopped erunning off idle. As soon as you give it gas it hogs up and dies out. I feel this is an ignition problem but don't know where to start. It idles fine and starts fine. But as soon as it comes off idle with the throttle it still runs but hogs up and will not accelerate. Like it hits the rev limiter right off idle. Are there any things I should check out.

Answer
Hi James.

This is not an ignition problem.  If it were, it wouldn't run at all.  This sounds more like something related to the fuel system, or more specifically, the carbs.

Start by checking the connection from the air filter to the carbs, then from there to the maniolds and from the manifolds to the head.  If these connections are loose, then it will cause an imbalance of the mixture and cause the bike to run lean untill the pressure can equalize.

Also check the carbs themselves, since a dirty or sticking internal carb mechanism can cause a similar issue.

Start with those and let me know what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.
