Motorcycle Repair: Too much oil, crank case vent, oil seepage

Question
I accidently added twice as much oil as this 83 GL1100 Goldwing recommends.  (3.4 qts recommended)  Did not get 1 mile down the road and a lot of white smoke out the tail pipes and the engine died.  All kinds of oil under the bike on the road.  Is is possible I damaged the engine?

Answer
Hi Larry.

The GL series engine is a tough bird.  Hard to kill.  The white smoke was oil seepage into the cylinders being burned off and it probably died because of fuel starvation because of the excess oil, which was also blown out the crank case vent.

Drain the oil and fill the bike with fresh oil in the proper amount and start it up.  If it seems to be running "wrong" then get it into the shop for them to look at.  It may still blow a little white smoke at first, but it should go away after a couple of minutes.

Good luck and ride safe.
