Motorcycle Repair: Kawasaki KZ 550 LTD Tachometer gear, kawasaki kz 550, allen bolt

Question
Chris,  I am doing a valve adjustment on a 1981 KZ 550 LTD.  I had to remove the camshaft to pull the lifters and replace the shims.  I have a Clymer manual and it says to remove the Tachometer gear prior to installing the exhaust camshaft.  The manual is not real detailed in removing the tachometer gear.  The manual says to remove the tachometer bolt and pinion holder stops at the cylinder head.  I'm assuming the tachometer bolt is the allen bolt that holds the stops in place.  Then it says to pull the cable guide and tachometer drive gear from the cylinder head.  Do I just pull on the cable guide.  It seems a step is missing.  Can you help.  Thanx, Doug

Answer
Hi Doug.

On rare occassions, the Clymer manual is wrong, but not often.  If you feel that there is a step missing then follow the manual's instructions slowly and methodically.  If it is missing a step, then you will see that step when you are doing the work.

In this case, it sounds like the manual is right.

Let me know what happens.
Good luck and ride safe.
