Motorcycle Repair: brake light, kawasaki kz440, brake light switch

Question
Mark - you've been a great help in my finishing up the restoration of my 1982 kawasaki kz440 ltd (D model).  The last problem (I hope) is the brake light.  The switch seems to be o.k. and the light was working up until today.  Now the light will not go on when the brake pedal is depressed although the tail light is on as it should be.  What should I be checking to resolve this.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Silverfox,

You should always include your email address with your questions for our convenience.

Check the brake light bulb element. Is it in good working condition?

Check the brake light bulb socket. Is it clean or corroded? Is voltage present with running light and brake light?

Back trace the circuit conductor wiring from the brake light assembly, to the brake light switch and eventually throught entire brake circuit. Inspect connectors for loose, corroded, or other defects.

Isolate the brake light switch. Using a multimeter, test switch operation continuity. You should have continuity with switch applied.

Check brake switch adjustment. This adjustment determines when the brake light illuminates with pedal travel.

Check brake light switch spring. Does it appear to be in good condition? Is it strectched or bent out of shape?

Have a great weekend.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
