Motorcycle Repair: Clutch free play and low speed Idle, stop screw, clutch cable

Question
Chris, Thanks first for your speedy response to my question.  When you talk about free play is that meaning that the clutch handle pulls about 1/4 of an inch before it starts engaging the clutch cable?  If so then I have my clutch adjusted to tight.  My second question is the bike has sat idle for about one year before I have received it I got the bike to idle by itself yesterday, by adjusting the throtle stop screw, I do beleive the my low speed idle jet is clogged a little, I have used a little carb cleaner, and have put carb cleaner that mixes with the fuel as well in the tank.  As the bike ran for awhile yesterday I was able to slowly back the throttle stop screw back out, and slowly push the choke knob in.  I by the end of yesterday, I was able to ride it, and let it idle at about 2100 rpm with choke completely off.  I think this means that the carb cleaner is doing its job, seeing is that I am able to slowly back the throtle stop screw out and keep the choke off, but not so much that it will allow me to idle at 1000 rpm yet.  But yesterday is the first time it idled on its own, just not at the appropriate level.  As the the bike idles after backing the throttle stop screw out and choke in the rpm's slowly creep higher and higher. that is why i feel the carb cleaner is doing its job.  Am I right?  Again thanks for all the help you give.

Answer
Hi again, Gary.

You are on the right track.  With the choke on, the bike should idle normally for a minute (sometimes less) and then increase in rpm's.  The increase is the indication that the engine is starting to warm up.  You can begin releasing the choke at that time.
It may still not want to idle properly for a few minutes, but that is okay.  Just give a tiny bit of throttle for a moment or two and it should normalise.

Constant adjustment of the idle speed screw is not needed.  Once you set the idle, with the bike warmed up, then leave it be.

As far as the carb cleaning is concerned, you may still want to get the carbs cleaned and re-synchronized.  That is up to you, but it is recommended.

You are doing very well so far.  Get yourself the repair manual if you haven't already done so and just read through it a bit.  hit the areas that you are most concerned with and refer to the book as much as you need.

Good luck and ride safe.
