Motorcycle Repair: Just purchase 1st harley. Not a Honda., piston slap, question thanks

Question
--Not sure how this works,  Follow up question.  Thanks for your quick reply.  To answer your question, the knocking and ticking doesn't start until the engine is warm.  The knocking also starts when the engine gets over certain rpm.  I don't have an rpm but if i'm around 800 at idle, the knock come in at about 1400 rpm. about less than quarter throttle. When the ticking starts it is always there,(engine is hot)
I have to get to the dealer to buy a manual as I purchased this bike at an auction and it came with nothing. Only had honda's and Yamaha's in the past.
I'm starting to fall in love though.  Also found a
site for tech tips #57 that talks exactly about what your saying.  (1st adjust primary chain then look
loose compensating nut in primary housing. if nut is tight it could be a stack up issue  add 24033 shim under head of nut.  This is all greek to me but I'm sure it makes sense to you.  Just getting to the primary chain will be new to me.  Once I get the manual I hope it will help with adjustment etc.

Is    sportster 883 custom with 5000km, to clunk into gear, require 1-2 seconds of clutch before entering 1st gear to avoid chatter of gears and have minor knocking and ticking when engine is warm.  My 1st harley and
it doesn't seem like a honda at all.
Tks in advance
Answer -
Check your primary chain to make sure its properly adjusted and check the adjustment on the clutch.
When does the knocking and ticking occure. Durning acceration or all the time?
Mike

Answer
Generally you never see a loose compensating nut. they are torqued very tight.
The knocking could be several things. You might be getting piston slap or you might have a rod going bad. The ticking could be just a noisy lifter. Its hard for me to say on here since I cant hear the noise.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
