ok here we go...I have a 1995 Eclipse se non turbo 4 cylinder with AC.  cold or hot it doesnt matter The car will just die. turn the key off and back on you should see lights on the left only two light up. the engine will turn over but no fire. I disconnected the positive cable for 10 min. hooked it back up and the thing strted just fine.
the car will some times run for a week and no problem....then tonight it ran for 20 miles did it again. 70 mph and it died like someone turned off the key. i looked down and all the lights were gone except the 2. I pulled over disconnected the battery waited 10 min hooked it up and it started and ran fine. another thing is this when it is acting up nothing seems to work like the fuel pump dont kick on when you turn the key and the car doesnt fire....then disconnect the battery and bam the fuel pump comes on and the car fires and away you go.

I took it to the shop and they said nothing was wrong with the car..they said it needed a 300 dollar fuel pump. when i asked how come it wasnt fireing and how the fuel pump was connected to the fireing of the plugs he said it needed a brain to...another 350 dollars. this car has done this sort of thing for about 3 years now. but now it is more frequent when it started it would be months between but now it seems to do it about every 250 miles or less. and im scared of the car leaving me on the side of the road.

Hi James,

I would start with a new computer. You do not need a fuel pump. I feel the computer is fried. You can get one from the bone yard for about $150. They will need the numbers from your old one. I would give you the numbers, but in 95 they used 20 something different computers and only the one you have will work with your car.

The proof that it's a bad computer is that everytime you disconnect the battery, you reset the PCM. PCM = computer.

A faster way to reset it is to disconnect both terminals and hold them together for 5 seconds! No, really! We do it all the time.

ok I'll give that a try. which box is the actual one. I have two two grey boxes mounted next to the fuse panel, and were is the number located on the box? touch them both together uh...I would have never thought of trying that thanks.

Answer
Hi James,

I stumbled across a recall for your PCM! This could be very cool if it's not expired. Recall number EMR-99-001.

NO.: EMR-99-001
DATE: December, 1998
MODEL: 1995 Eclipse 2.0L Non-Turbo M/T

SUBJECT:
ASPIRATOR SYSTEM REMOVAL AND FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR INSPECTION OR REPLACEMENT - EMISSIONS RECALL CAMPAIGN

PURPOSE
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. (MMSA) is recalling all 1995 Eclipse vehicles equipped with the 2.0L non-turbo (420A) engine and manual transmission for an emissions related condition.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Description of Condition
The NOx emission level on these vehicles may not comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or California Air Resources Board (CARB) emission regulations. Additionally, the fuel pressure regulator on some of these vehicles may fail.

Remedy
This Emissions Recall Campaign includes the following procedures:

^ Inspection, and replacement of the fuel pressure regulator if required.
^ Removal of the exhaust aspirator system (secondary air injection system)
^ Reprogramming (or replacement, if necessary) of the powertrain control module (PCM)*
NOTE :A PCM reprogramming cartridge (MIT992016) will be sent to each dealership for use in completing this Emissions Recall Campaign.

Repair kits for removing the aspirator system (P/N 05013898AA), fuel pressure regulators (P/N M04883076), and PCMs (if required) are available to perform the necessary modifications to the affected vehicles. Refer to the Parts Information section of this bulletin.

*NOTE :Some early vehicles were built with a Powertrain Control Module (PCM) that cannot be reprogrammed and must be replaced. If the PCM requires replacement, as determined by the service procedure, refer to the Parts Information chart to determine the appropriate replacement PCM part number.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
