Motorcycle Repair: 1982 Honda CM250 Custom, honda cm250, cluch

Question
Hi,

I have a Honda CM250 Custom which, after much tinkering, finally runs pretty good.  I'm very happy with it.  I have only one problem which keeps haunting me.  When the engine is warm (doesn't seem to happen with a cold engine) and I roll completely off the throttle to stop or shift gears, there is a 2 - 4 second delay before the RPMs go back to normal idle.  Picture this.  I downshift while approching a intersection to make a complete stop. Just before comming to the complete stop I roll completely off the throttle and pull in the cluch to shift to first before hitting the brakes. The engine revs at high RPM for 2 - 4 seconds then goes back down to normal idle. It doesn't sound like a long time, but it makes me look like I don't know what I'm doing.  It's very frustrating...

Any suggestions would be helpfull.

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Duane.

The slides in the carbs are sticking.  Dump some fuel treatment (the kind with jet fuel in it) into the tank and run the bike like normal.  If it does not solve the problem, then you will likely have to clean the carbs, which I suspect is the crux of the problem anyway.

Good luck and ride safe.
