could you tell me which line goes where off the oil tank. i bought this bike off a guy who had the motor out.after he put it back in it keeps pushing all the oil out.i'm not sure of the year ser# is 60xl4289.there's one hose on oil pump, one on right side cover, and one on engine case.the oil tank looks like two ports have stand tubes and the other draws out of bottom.does oil pump feed from tank or through the strainer in right side?
Answer -
What model bike is it?
Mike
sportster. in the repair manual it shows a strainer in the right side up to a early 1984 but doesn't show oil line routing (clymer repair manual)

Answer
Without knowing the year I am going to take a stab at it. You sound like you have a pre 77 sportster since you have a single outlet on the pump.
The single outlet on the pump is the feed for the motor from the oil tank. Look in the oil tank and the lowerst fitting is the feed.
The highest line on the tank, close to the tank is the return and the other is the crankcase vent.
Good luck and happy riding
