Motorcycle Repair: 1971 honda cb175, honda cb175, mile trip

Question
Falcon, I have a 1971 Honda cb175.  I just rebuilt the top end and she runs great!

I took it on a 40 mile trip yesterday into the country and somewhere about 15 miles from home all my lights quit.  Headlight, headlight indicator light, tail/brake light, blinkers and blinker indicator.  The neutral indicator and the horn still work fine, and the bike runs fine keeping a fully charged battery.  I have the manual and all but I can read the diagram for the life of me.

Is there one component that links all of these together?

One thing I did notice...on the rear of the cyliinder head cover there is a drain or vent of sorts.  It's just a hole pointing to the rear.  Well, I believe on the trip it was releasing some oil and I know now that it should have a hose attached to it.  Well it didn't and it sprayed on the carbs a bit and soaked the wires that come from the alternator and go to the front of the bike.  I don't know if this is related, but I cannot find anything else that changed.  All the bulbs are fine, fuse by the battery is fine.

Let me know if  you cana think of anything.

Thanks again,

Answer
Hi Andrew.

Every light is on a fused circuit.  There should be a circuit for the head/tail light (sometimes one for each), one for the signals and brake light, one for the horn and one for the instruments.
Check all of the fuses.  It isn't likely, but it is possible that the fuses blew at once.  This would indicate a short in the main wiring harness.

Did you smell any burning plastic smell?  This would indicate a serious short.

I would recommend getting the bike to a mechanic to have it checked until you have had a chance to learn to read schematics (not an easy thing to do....I still have trouble with it sometimes).

Good luck and ride safe.
