Motorcycle Repair: Changed handlebars, didnt consider throttle, clutch, brake cable length, etc..., yamaha virago 750, bike bandit

Question
Good Day. I am an amateur motorcycle mechanic/enthusiast that seems to know just enough to get myself in trouble! I brought a 1981 Yamaha Virago 750 back to life and am in the final stages of getting her ready for the road. I decided to install a new handlebar of larger dimensions but did not consider the obvious until I installed them today. My throttle cable, clutch cable, brake cable, etc... are now too short. I have succesfully spliced the electronics but the cables have me perplexed. I live in a rural community and I must order in everything. Are there generic cable lengths available that I can trim to fit? Who carries them? Any pitfalls or special recommendations? Thanks for any help you can provide! Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,

Cables can be fabricated to length, though requires a bit of practice. It's easier and cheaper to purchase cables once you know what cables will fit.

Visit Motorcycle USA's Message Boards "www.motorcycle-usa.com" and ask other Virago owners if they have performed similar swaps and know what cables will work with the new handle bars.

Try contacting the handle bar manufacturer for tech support.
