Motorcycle Repair: Kawasaki Zephyr 550 - Stater, kawasaki zephyr 550, regulator rectifier

Question
Hi, I have a 1991 Zephyr 550. I find that there is not much power when turning, it's almost as if the bike will just cut out, and there is not much pickup. Also the bike just cut out on me while I was waiting at stop lights, and I wasn't able to start it again until I charged the battery. I was told this is the Stater ? I have been looking to purchase the part because the repair was quoted at $650. Is this a fair price ? Do you  have a part number and does this sound like a stater problem ?

Answer
Hi Katherine,

Unfortunately, $650 is about the goining rate for factory parts and/or labor. Compare prices and view microfiche parts at: www.bikebandit.com Once the website opens, click "OEM Parts" and then select the year, make, and model from the menus that follow.

Get a copy of the Service Manual and learn about testing, repairing, and maintaining your Shadow. Manuals are available on eBay, Barnes & Noble, local library, Bike Bandit, and on-line. Shop around for the best prices.

Perform an output test of the altenator to determine if it is working properly. Test the regulator/rectifier and check for loose or corroded electrical connectors. A loose battery cable will cause similar symptoms.

Visit www.electrosport.com and follow their "Fault Finding Chart" to test the charging system components. Check Electro Sport's prices. They manufacture high-quality parts, much finer than factory.

I return tech information files by email. There was no email address with your question as requested in my instructions.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
