I have a 1982, 1340cc Shovel. I seem to be getting excessive oil out of the crankcase vent. It goes up to the back of the air filter and even being up that high there is still quite a bit of oil dripping out. When I just crank the engine over it seems to pulse out with each revolution.
Answer -
Does it only come out when you are trying to start the bike or does it come out all the time?
Mike

It seems to be all the time. When I ride there is oil on the side of the bike and when I am parked after riding or sitting running their seems to be a puddle of oil starting to form under the bike.

Answer
What is happening is that air is pushed out through the vent by the cylinders. A small amount of oil travels with it and is suppose to go through the carb. the shovels were bad about taking to much oil with the air.
The best thing you can do is remove the line from the air filter. Locate the fitting on the motor and turn it so it points toward the ground. Attach a short section of hose to it. Now the oil wont get on the bike. It goes to the ground and your air filter doenst get wet with oil. There is really no good repair to stop the problem.
Good luck and happy riding
