Hey there I have a 87 kawasaki zx600b and it is having starting problems.. I go to start it and nothing happens so, I decided to jump it to my truck and after about 5 minutes of holding the ign button it cranks and cranks for 5 minutes then it will fire.. You can go out and ride it and then take like a 4 hour break and it will start back up but if it sit's for more than like 20-30 hours without running I have to jump it to my truck and let it crank for 5-10 minutes.. Your help will be appreciated Sincerely Cody

Hi Cody.

Have you checked the battery fluid levels?  Have you checked the cells with a hygrometer?

if any of the cells show as bad with the hygrometer, then you have a bad battery, which is what I suspect, in your case.

Good luck and ride safe.

Answer
Hi Cody.

This is sounding like a probable stator or regulator/ectifier problem.

The repair manual for your bike has specific testing requirements for the regulator/rectifier, but before you do that, get the bike started and see what the battery is charging at.  It should be 14-16 VDC.  If it is less than that, then the stator coil is suspect and if the regulaor/rectifier tests good, then replace the stator.

Be aware that regulator/rectifiers do not go bad very often, but it has been known to happen.

Now if you do not have a multimeter to check the voltage, a good guage to see if the stator is working at all is to rev the engine (no higher than 3000 - 3500 rpm's) and see if the lights get brighter and dimmer as the rpms go up and down.  If the light level does not change, then get a meter and test the stator coil.  It may not be charging the battery enough or at all.

Let me know how it goes.
Good luck and ride safe.
