Motorcycle Repair: 96 honda 1100 shadow ace, honda 1100 shadow, clutch lever

Question
difficulty getting the starter to engage, seems to work better if neutral light is on, but sometimes difficult to get light on even when gears are in neutral.  Is there some sort of neutral switch or interlock giving me problems?

Answer
Erik, if you check your wiring diagram in the owner's manual, assuming that you have one, you will see various switches in the starter circuits. There is one for the clutch lever, side stand and the neutral light. The bike can either be in gear with the clutch lever pulled in or in neutral with the clutch lever out.

From what you describe, it sounds like the neutral switch is failing perhaps, or the wiring to it has some connection problems. The neutral switch is a ground into the shift drum, usually.

Hopefully it is a wiring or neutral switch problem and not something to do with the shift drum/forks or transmission itself.
