Motorcycle Repair: Hard starting, suzuki rmz 250, fuel system

Question
Hello Chris,
I have a '04 Suzuki RMZ 250 and ride it occasionally. Recently it has been hard to start when it is cold. Once its warmed up it starts quite easily. The last time I had it out, the only way I could get it to start when it was cold was to hold the throttle wide open like it was flooded. I have put in a new plug but it didn't seem to help. It also back fires and shoots flames out of the exhaust every couple of kicks. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Don.

since the bike spends most of it's service life without being ridden, then the fuel system is most likely the problem.  Clean the fuel system, including the carb.  Then drain and reseal the tank to keep any further contaminants from getting back into the system.

Good luck and ride safe.
