Motorcycle Repair: whats up falcon, ..., motorcycle dealerships, cam chain

Question
whats up falcon,
i have a ? for you, i have a 95 zx9 i bought it about 3yrs ago from a friend, i live here in b'ham, al and i dont like dealing with motorcycle dealerships when it comes to repairs but i know my bike is a little older so i deal with them anyway.i took my bike in because it would not do anything (start) they told me it was the wiring and it would cost 1200 dollars  to get it fixed so i took it to a local bootleg mechanic and he fixed it for 300.00 dollars, then my chain was loose i took it to a dealership they tightened it then they told me i needed a new chain and sproket, i got that done then i had an mysterious oil leak and i got that done now keep in mind all this has happened in 3months anyway the oil leak is back in the same spot anyway after the last time i said this is it they are getting over on me and i have a short temp, anyway i have a clicking noise that sounds like it is coming from my cams is there an oil or something i can use?

Answer
Hi Tommy.

Where is the oil leak coming from?  You could have a bad gasket or seal or some of the engine case bolts could have loosened up, which is common for almost every bike out there.

As far as the clicking, it is likely that the clicking might likely be due to the valve gap being off in one or more of the cylinders.  If the bike is at, beyond or near 50,000 miles, then that is what you need to check.  There is also the possibility that the cam chain is in need of tightening.

Start with those rather than a quickfix (quickfixes almost never work anyway).

As far as the shop you've been dealing with, hunt around for another if you don't like the one you've been dealing with, then make sure that you do not deal with that shop again.

Good luck and ride safe.
