Motorcycle Repair: YAMAHA 1980 650CC 4CYL., proper tire pressure, wt oil

Question
HI FALCON, I JUST BOUGHT A USED BIKE HERE IN JALISCO,MEXICO,NO DEALERS OR EVEN TECHS LOCALLY. 1) WHAT WT. OIL DO I USE IN THE CRANKCASE?
2) OIL FOR THE SHAFT DRIVE?
3) PROPER TIRE PRESSURE?
MANY THANKS,SCOTT

Answer
Hi Scott.

First of all, with no techs around to refer to, you need to get the repair manual.  It is a reference that you will find to be more valuable than gold.

Now, as far as the oil, the bike will take between 3.5 - 4Qts of 20W50 or 10W40 oil.  If the weather is perpetually warm to hot all year round, then go with 20W50.  It is best for hotter climates, otherwise 10W40 is just fine.  And remember to change the oil every 3,000 miles or 6 months (whichever comes first).

There is a special oil for the shaft and it is called gear oil.

Proper tire pressure should be stamped on the tires, but if it isn't, then I usually presurise my tires to around 32psi.

Good luck and ride safe.
