Motorcycle Repair: Valkyrie starting, chris answer, honda valkyrie

Question
The bike has about 2000 miles on it and had been sitting for awhile when I purchased it.
Is it difficult to clean the carbs?  Any special tools required?
Thanks.

Question -
I have a 2000 Honda Valkyrie with starting problems.  Revs high for a second then dies regardless of what I do with choke or throttle.  Then to get it going have to throttle a bit and keep hitting the starter.
Also, when driving at speed is fine but from stop there is a hesitation on initial throttle then engages and takes off.
Thanks, Chris

Hi Michael.

How close is the bike to 50,000 miles?  It could be due or overdue for it's scheduled valve adjustment.

It also sounds like the carbs are due for synchronization as well.

For the starting issue, if the bike spends time in seasonal or winter storage or does not get ridden more than once or twice a week, then the carbs need cleaning as well.

Start with those and let me know what happens.

Good luck and ride safe.

Answer
Hi Michael.

Since the bike has so few miles for it's age, then the carbs definitely need cleaning.

Cleaning the carbs does not really require special tools, but if you've never done it before, then I would suggest taking it to a mechanic to have the work done properly.

Good luck and ride safe.
