Motorcycle Repair: No Spark, yamaha xj650, yamaha dealer

I just got myself a 1982 yamaha xj650. at the moment it cranks over but gets no spark. the only time i get spark is when i turn the key off. and the spark is only on cyl. 1 & 3, If i unplug the said coil and switch to the 2 & 4 coil i get spark when i turn the key off. i have checked all connections and grounds and found no broken wires.

Hi Joseph,

Get a copy of the service manual and follow the illkustrated procedures for testing the ignition system. There's way too much to type to explain it all.

Test ignition switch and related circuits until the source of the problem is found. Repair accordingly.

Otherwise, I recommend having the problem inspected by a local Yamaha dealer. They'll have the equipment to test the ignition system accurately.
