Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): governor adjustment?, gas line antifreeze, air mixture

Question
I bought a used snowflite snowblower with a tecumseh engine. Ran rough and was idling for short periods.I put a new fuel line on,new fuel with gas line antifreeze, and cleaned and adjusted carb. Now it idles fine until I put a load on it(like blowing small amounts of snow) and then it cuts out. In order to get it restarted, I have to partially choke it, but then it blows black smoke and then straightens out until I put a load on it again. Your help would be greatly appreciated, thank you. p.s. it did not come with an air filter, should this be done first?

Answer
Hello Tim:

1- Most Snow Throwers/Blowers Do Not have an Air Filter. Try Setting the Air Mixture Screws First. The Following is the Instruction File for Setting the Air Mixture Screws. Any Input is Appreciated. The Procedure is the Same for 1 or 2 Mixture Screws, Just Use the Instruction File and Skip Over the Section with the Missing Mixture Screw. Now Setting the Air Mixture Screws:  ****Turn the Idle Air (L) and Main Air (H) Mixture Screws In Until SNUG **Do Not Jam** Then Reverse Both Screws 1 1/2 Turns. Set the Throttle Full Open, Start the Engine. Turn the Main Air (H) Mixture Screw Clockwise Until Proper Revs are Obtained. Occasionally you May have to Turn this Counter Clockwise to Achieve the Proper Revs. Now Allow the Engine to Idle. Set the Engine Idle Screw (Not Idle Air) so the Engine will Stay Running if Required. Now Set the Idle Air (L) Mixture Screw so there is No Hesitation when Throttling from Idle to Full Throttle. Reset the Engine Idle if Required.**** 2- If the Carburetor has No Air Mixture Screws or Does Not have the High (Full Throttle) Mixture Screw, then Soak and Clean the Carburetor Again. SOmetimes you have to Saok a Carburetor 2 or 3 Times to Completely Remove the Varnish that is Restricting the Gas Flow through the Carburetors Passages. 3- Check the Valve Clearances. If this is an OHV Engine , the Valve Clearances Not being Correct will Cause the Prolblem you Described. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
