Motorcycle Repair: suzuki carburetor, suzuki katana 750, 2000 suzuki katana 750

Question
hello falcon i just recently installed a carburetor in my 2000 suzuki katana 750. the reason i had to install it was there was a hose that went from the side of the carb to the gas tank and from what i was told the bike wont work unless its there and i looked at it so many times and it didnt look like any possible way i could fix it so i bought a used carb off of ebay. the carb was from 2002 katana. well my problem  is that when i start up the bike it dosent start like it used to. well i used to use the choke so it can warm up then i would let the choke off after a couple of min but now i have to use the throttle to start it. i have to press the start button then give it gas then it starts. well after it warms up when i sit on it or even try to drive it it quits on me and the only way i can save it from dying is use the choke and then its fine but then does the same thing if i run through that cycel.i thought it might be the knob on it that i might have to adjust but that dosent even change the rpm control so what do you think might be wrong with my bike and what do you think i need to do?

Answer
Hi Andrew.

What exactly was wrong with the original carb?  You just didn't like the hose from the carb?  If the bike ran fine before, then the problem was that you tried to fix what wasn't broke (if I read your question right).

Every year, manufacturers make changes to the designs of their bikes.  Most of the time, they are not noticable because they are internal mechanical, like changes in the carb, for instance.
You should never ever get a part that wasn't made for your make/model/year bike.  It is very possible that the carb that you put on will not work properly on your bike because it was made for a 2002 model.  If there was a mechanical issue with the old carb, then get that carb fixed and reinstall it on the bike and see what happens.

Let me know what happens.

Good luck and ride safe.
