Motorcycle Repair: Motorcycle theft damage, honda varadero, motorcycle theft

Question
This may well be a problem you can not help me with, but its proven to be very difficult to get any help in this field. My 2005 Honda Varadero 125VXL was stolen recovered although it appears to have minor damage in general,I am concerned about the damage caused to the engine and frame. The bike has obviously been used off road and because I had only done 490 miles   from new not yet run in, I wonder if this would result in engine problems later on? Also the steering lock was broken off could this affect the frame in any way? the bike is due to be seen by a insurance assessor and I would feel better prepared with answers to these questions so I know I am not being misled after all I chose Honda for its engine reliability to get me to and from work. Hope you can help many thanks.

Answer
Hi David,

Q:  "...I had only done 490 miles from new not yet run in, I wonder if this would result in engine problems later on?

A:  Unlikely, in my opinion.

Engine break-in periods are controversial. Some persons believes we should follow a manufacturer's break-in procedures. Others believes no break-in is necessary. I've put fresh pistons and cylinders to the extreme loads of roadracing with positive results. Visit the following website and review this guy's opinion on engine break-in.

Q:  "...Also the steering lock was broken off could this affect the frame in any way?

A:  It depends upon how the lock was forced. I doubt the frame is bent or otherwise seriously damaged with exception of the lock. The forks or steering stem (triple tree) may be tweaked if the handlebars were used as leverage to break the lock.
