Motorcycle Repair: 2000 Honda Aero 1100cc, honda aero 1100, stator coil

Question
Chris,

My 2000 Honda Aero 1100 will no longer start. It acts as if the battery is dead, eventhough I just bought a brand new one and it has run ok for 4-6 weeks. When I attempt to start the bike, it will turn over 2 or 3 times slowly and then just click,click,click,click... This is on a fully charged battery! Could it be the starter or cylinoid? I have not attempted to push start it at this point, but may give it a try tomorrow. Suggestions?

Thanks,
Scott

Answer
Hi Scott.

The problem you are describing sounds a lot like a charging issue, not a battery or starter/starter solenoid issue.

Check your charging system for shorts and then start the bike and check to see what the battery is charging at.  It should be charging at least 14 Volts DC.

If it is not charging properly, then start by checking the stator coil directly and match what you find (AC volts) against the specs in the repair manual (get one if you don't have one).  Then do the same with the regulator/rectifier.

There is either a short in the charging system or there is a faulty component in the charging system.

Let me know what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.
