Motorcycle Repair: Replacing Starter 1978 CB 750 four K, cb 750 four, step proceedures

Question
First off thanks for doing this. You are too cool. I am going to be replacing the starter in my 1978 CB 750 four K. I have only got as far as taking off the cover plate. I took tha carbs off because the need to be cleaned out...(old Gas) and i took off the air box. I noticed that the cam chain tentioner looks like it may be in the way of getting the starter out. do i have to get into all that or should it come right out. also im not sure if there are any other things i need to do. and which bolts actualy hold the starter in. I thought I knew untill I saw a blown up diagram of the area. Any Help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Matt

Answer
Hi Matt.

Are you talking about the kickstarter?  Because there shouldn't be anything blocking removal or access to the electric starter motor.  As a matter of fact, the cam chain, which is at the engine centerline, shouldn't be anywhere near the starter mechanism, which is at the outer half of the engine.

If all you have is an exploded diagram, then I recommend getting the repair manual.  It will have a step-by-step proceedures for starter removal.

I am sorry that I cannot help further, but it has been almost 20 years since I have worked on any CB series bikes, so my memories may be a little off on some of the details and I don't want to lead you off in the wrong direction.

Good luck and ride safe.
