Motorcycle Repair: 1980 750f carberators, vacuum gages, float valves

Question
Chris my son and I are rebuilding a 1980 honda 750f the last thing is to get the carberators working properly.  If was difficult getting it started after rebuild - carbs not giving engine gas.  Have taken carbs apart and cleaned.  After starting cylinder 2 not running.  Tinkered with, now idle speed 3500-4000 and no power.  Have vacuum gages shows about same on all carbs.  Help. Checked spark to cylinders ok.Thanks Ken

Answer
Hi Ken.

Idle speed should not be as high as you have indicated, either.  The average idle speed is anywhere from 1100 rpm to 1500 rpm.

Is fuel getting to all of the carbs?  Are the float valves sticking closed on the affected carbs?

Try to drain the affected carbs.  If nothing comes out of them, then pull the carbs and remove the float bowls to check to see if the floats are sticking.

If the floats are not sticking and there is no fuel in the offending carbs, then the problem is in the internal lines of the carbs.

Start with that and let me know what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.
