Motorcycle Repair: Jumper cables connected to wrong terminals on ATV, now it wont start at all., jumper cables, electrical diagnosis

Question
In the past, I have sucessfully used jumper cables to jump my 1999 Honda 300 Fourtrax.  Yesterday, I mistakenly connected the cables to the wrong terminals which caused a big spark and sizzle.  After connecting the cables correctly, the ATV wouldn't start. I don't know where should I start when trying to locate my problem.  What do you suggest?  Thanks, buster_bigdog@hotmail.com.

Answer
Hi Scott,

Reversing polarity usually cooks the electronic ignition (CDI/ECM).

I recommend having a local tech perform electrical diagnosis to verify the problem.

Avoid replacing parts in attempt to fix the problem. $$$ First, verify the source and replace defective parts.
