Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha/DT100, yamaha dt100, fuel air mixture

Question
mike46hoagie@bellsouth.net        would like to know why there are two sparkplugs in the cylinder head and how to mix 2 cycle oil(wal-mart brand) with the gasoiline. Automatic oiler is no longer in the picture. Picked this thing up in a yardsale for my grandkids. Trying to make necessary repairs. Thanks for any help!

Answer
Hi Mike,

Q:  "...would like to know why there are two sparkplugs in the cylinder head"

A:  Actually, the second plug hole came with a threaded bolt (dummy plug) and gasket. Owners carried a second plug inplace of the dummy plug. When the primary plug loaded up and fouled, riders switched plugs out and continued riding.

Q:  "...how to mix 2 cycle oil(wal-mart brand) with the gasoiline."

A:  Typically it's 32:1. You'll find most of the major manufacturers will still recommend that ratio in their MX bike owners manuals.

The problem you have is the carb jetting. It is sized for only gas to go through at the correct fuel/air mixture and now you're putting gas plus oil through the same jet. Oil is replacing a specific volume of gas. If you're not putting in the original volume of gas, the fuel/air mixture will be lean.

What I'm saying is you may have to put in larger jets. However, the engine was very forgiving by design. You may not have to do a thing. You should perform plug readings to see if its running lean.

The accuracy of plug reading is affected by the overall condition of the engine. If you have crank seals leaking, or gaskets leaking, etc, it all affects the plug reading.
