Motorcycle Repair: no spark, honda 50cc, motor brushes

Question
I have a honda 50cc quad. It wont start so I checked for spark and the spark is very irregular but mostly no spark if that makes sense. I tried a different plug and the same thing. So my question is where do I go from here? I also want to add that the electric start wont alway engage every time. I can push the button a few times and nothing then the fourth time it will turn over the engine. I can also be turning over the engine and just stop dead. I thought it might be the battery but I'm not sure.I hope you can shed some light on this!

Answer
Hi Troy,

Get a copy of the service manual. The manual has illustrated procedures for testing and repairing problems.

I can help you when you have the service manual and need assistance. I will make references to the manual. You will need to return answers to the references.

Otherwise...

Starting problem:

Check for loose wiring or connectors. Check starter button contacts and starter motor brushes.

Ignition problem...

Check for loose wiring or connectors. Check CDI/ECM for proper operation.

I hoped I've shed some light on the problems and introduced you to troubleshooting. There's no quick answer. Parts need to be inspected and tested to locate the source of the problems. There are many problem sources to check.
