Motorcycle Repair: holed piston replacement, piston material, shively

Question
I am replacing a holed piston in an old 2 stroke suzuki-apparently vintage-1984. My question is this-given that some of the piston material ended up in the bottom end is it necessary to strip down entirely the engine to clean it or just remove the engine from the bike and then flush well? Not sure what to flush with either.Thanks.

Answer
Hi Ken,

I recommend complete dis-assembly and inspection. Crankshaft and crank bearings may have been damaged when the engine failed. The parts need to be inspected.

Fine particles cannot be flushed from the bottom end. Parts need to be separated, inspected, cleaned, re-inspected, and reassembled.

Of course you can flush it, get lucky, and not experience any problems. Use virgin parts cleaner solution (still risky) or Kerosene.
