Motorcycle Repair: electrical charging system, rotor stator, meter check

Question
Mike;
I have an '81 flt. I just recently replaced the rotor, stator, and voltage regulator.  (It had a 32 amp system installed when I bought it, so I replaced it with same alike items)  My primary chain adjuster bracket came loose, and made chips in the primary.(small)  Now I have no charging indication on my volt meter on the dash.  Did I short the system out?  Do I need to replace the whole thing again?  How do I check to see if it's just the meter?  Sorry, but I'm an electrical dunce.
Thanks.

Answer
First thing you need to do is check to see if its really charging. With a volt meter check at the battery. Start the bike and at 2000 RPM you should be getting around 13.5 volts. If you do then either the meter is bad or you have a bad wire. If not then check your installation and make sure you have all the wires connected properly. You can also test the stator you put in. You need a AC volt meter. Unplug the regulator and start the bike. Test at the boot for the stator. You should be getting around 60 volts at 2000 RPM. If it tests ok and the wiring is correct then the regulator is bad.
Good luck and happy riding
