I have 81 cb650 custom.  rebuilt carbs, new battery fully charged, new plugs,  Bike does not want to start on its own.  I can use starter fluid and it starts. Once started and warm it will start on own most of time.  How do I know I am getting strong(?) spark?  I get spark but don't know if strong enough to start motor if cold.  Charging system puts out 14 volts when running > 2000 rpm.  Could it still be carb problem?  traded wire and ciols but all were used before, can they be tested?

HI Jim,

The carbeuretors will need more thoroughly cleaned to restore proper performance.

Look for a blue arc when testing spark plugs. A blue arc means healthy voltage. I suspect the ingition system is fine.

Ignition coils can be tested by the following: resistance test, continuity tes, and by load test. Ohm and continuity tests are performed using a multimeter/volt-ohm meter (VOM). A load tester is an expensive special tool that dealerships use. Replicates running conditions with coils removed and connected to test device.

Get a copy of the service manual. The manual has illustrated procedures for testing the electrical system and more. The manual is the best $30 you'll spend on your CB650. It will pay for itself with the first repair or maintenance you perform.

Send me your email address as requested. I'll return tech information files to assist you with cleaning the carbs and electrical diagnosis.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively

Answer
Hi Jim,

Berryman's Chem-Dip is a very good product. I use the gallon size product with dip basket. Good stuff.

Stir the product contents before use. Use aerosol spray carb cleaner and brake cleaner after dipping carbs to chase excess Berryman's out of passageways, etc... Use compressed air as well, if you have that luxury.

Folow directions in the "Carb Cleaning 101" file carefully.

Check your email for tech files. Keep me posted on your progress.
