Motorcycle Repair: carb, fuel milage, stock pipes

Question
Mark, recently i replaced stock pipes with cobra drag pipes, rejetted w/134 size main jet and replaced the needle w/ e clip on the 3rd groove, turned the pilot screw all the way in and came out 3 turns. bike starts fine and idles fine but when the throttle is openend to 1/8 to 1/4 the engine will pop and chug and some time stall but past that point she runs great. it seems to be getting worse fuel milage than before i did this, used to get about 33mpg now 28 - 30 mpg.the problem seems to get better as it gets hotter. im riding a 04 vn1500 e7 kawasaki with a arlen ness big sucker filter using the stock cover. it seems to be burning fuel in the pipes after it is turned off this started after i turned the pilot screw in some. i have tried to turn the pilot screw in a little because i think it may be too rich but i am not a machanic. please help this is riding me crazy!

Answer
Hi Greg,

The carburetors will need tuned to correct the air-fuel mixtures. You, or a tech will need to continue tweaking the carbs until they're dialed in.

Jet kits get the A/F mix close. Additional tuning is usually required before riding.

Fuel consumption is the trade off with increased performance.
