Motorcycle Repair: Vulcan 750 starting problems, kawasaki vulcan 750, starter solenoid

Question
Hi Mark.  I recently bought a 1996 Kawasaki Vulcan 750 with about 14000 miles on it. One day while riding it, it stalled out at a traffic light and the starter wouldn't crank enough to start the bike. After trying to start it a few times, it finally would not even crank at all. I had the battery and spark plugs replaced and the wiring looks good. The bike seemed to start up fine for a day or two, but now it won't start again.  The starter will crank, but the engine just won't fire up.  Sometimes it backfires when trying to start it.  I can pop the clutch to start the bike, and it runs great afterwards. I'm just not sure whether I need a new starter, or if it's something else.  I heard these bikes have a problem with the stator.  Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Justin,

Perform an output test to check the charging system.

I suspect the starter motor's carbon brushes or the starter solenoid may be worn. It's usually the brushes when this happens. If so, simply replace the brushes.
