Motorcycle Repair: starting problems, yamaha vstar 1100 classic, carburetor jets

Question
hello, i have a 2000 yamaha vstar 1100 classic that when i bought it had been sitting around a while. I had to jumpstart to start, and later had to replace battery. after about a week of riding, the bike would not start, and i could not even jump start it, at this point i only get a electrical whine sound from the starter relay when pressing the start button. i checked the battery and it holds 12.4 volts, what could be the problem?

Answer
Hi Tony,

If the MC was stored or the engine not started for a period, the fuel likely has varnished.

When this happens, carburetor jets and fuel passageways become obstructed. This may prevent the engine from starting and/or running properly.

If this is the case, the carbs will need removed, partially disassembled and thoroughly cleaned. Other fuel related parts should be inspected. Varnishing can occur in fuel hoses, petcock, fuel pump, and tanks.

Battery voltage is a bit low. Should be 2.1VDC per cell minimum. Check electrolyte levels of each cell. Add distilled water to a cell if the level is below the "lower level" line on the battery case. Recharge  and re-test battery. Use a hydrometer designed for small batteries to test the specific gravity of each cell.

Never jump start a MC battery from a car or truck battery. Voltage may be the same, but current is much higher on the larger batteries and may damage the electronics and MC battery.
