Motorcycle Repair: 87 honda xr80r clutch, honda xr80r, clutch release

Question
I have a 87 honda xr80r that the clutch dose not work at all you pull the lever and nothing its still engaged in gear.  I took it apart and the clutch looks fine also do you know the proper torque for the four clutch bolts

Answer
Mike, either the clutch plates are fried, or it isn't assembled correctly or the release parts are not put in right.

The four bolts get about 7ft lbs. They just hold the parts in place with preset tension. You can't tighten them to get more clutch pressure.

The clutch adjuster in the right side cover, controls the clutch release. Kind of a tricky part to install correctly and adjust. The adjustment lever often slips out of place when the bike is being assembled vertically. On some bikes that use that type of clutch release setup, I used to just lay the bike on its side, so things stayed in place more easily.
