Motorcycle Repair: Shorted out 81 Kawaski KZ1000 LTD, blown fuses, headlight bucket

Question
I have power on both wires which feed to the rear brake switch (I was troubleshooting at the time). I inadvertenly grounded one. All power died no blown fuses, shorter wires behind the fush block or in the headlight bucket. I replaced the fuseable link & recharged the batery. The head light goes on dim and the lights go on the cluster. The bike does not click or crank. Prior to the shorting the bike it ran fine. Where should I go now? Thanks I also need to address a rear brake light which is always on. Previous owner was not much in the way of wiring. I know one wire is negative coming from the switch not sure which one?

Answer
I usually only answer questions on Harleys, but I might be able to help. If your battery is good and your headlight is going dim then you have a short in the system somewhere. You could have burned a wire.
If you have power which feeds the brake switch then the light would be on all the time. Generally a brake switch has power only on one side and the other goes to the light.
Good luck and happy riding
