we are experiencing a rattling noise which resembles nails and screws in a paperbag when you shake them. we took it to our local shop and they cant seem to detect what is wrong they said they have to take the whole engine apart...
it is a 1998 roadking with 37,000 miles on it.The bike has never had any problems just normal service stuff and cosmetic changes nothing to the motor itself...just chrome
Answer -
Noises are tough to do on here, because I cant hear them.
Where does the noise sound like its coming from? Top end, bottom end, primary? Does it do it when you rev the bike up or just at idle? When you took it to the shop did they tell where they looked?
Mike
it sounds like it is coming from the top toward the front but it is hard to tell...you can hear it when you are riding no matter in the upper RPM's what gear it is in.  they thought it was a cam shaft bearing but it wasnt. they changed the cam bearing on primary ignition control module. they also put adjustable lifters in it.

Answer
Since they put in adjustable pushrods I am going to assumn they didnt remove the heads. You said that is sounds like its coming from the front so first I would remove the lifter boxes and check the bearings that ride on the cam. Inspect the hydrolic lifters to make sure one is not collasping or not pumping up.  Next I would remove the heads and inspect them for a bad rocker or overly wore valve guide. I have seen valve seats come loose and rattle, but not very often. If you dont find anything there then pull the cylinders and inspect the pistons and rods.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
