Hi.  2005 FXD.  It is up on the lift and after I removed the caps to replace the fork oil I can't get them back on.  It seems that the springs are harder to compress with one hand than I thought.  I'm also older and weaker than I used to be.  Is there a trick you could recommend for one man to do this easily.

You might have to get a friend to help you push while you turn them. You can try using somthing to push them down by putting it on the cap and using the handlebars as a pry point. That might help you.
Good luck and happy riding

Are you saying that the dealer and independent shops need two men to perform this? It seems to me there would be a tool available such as a compression device or maybe a palm-sized ratchet that would allow one man to service the fork unit.  I would ask my dealer but in my experience they only want to sell me the service.

Answer
Sometimes they do. I generally compress the spring with my palm and turn the nut with the other, but if you cant  do that then that is why I suggested getting a friend to help you. I have not seen a tool to do this compression with. You can also try a wooden wedge between the handlebar and the cap to push it down.
Good luck and happy riding
