Motorcycle Repair: timing, timing hole, preignition

Question
I just bought an 84 FXST that is equipped with Crane H-4 single fire ignition. It has the LED timing light with the spark advance, rev limiter , and rear cylinder advance adjustments. When i shut the bike down it sputters almost like pre ignition. i moved the timing plate to line up with the slot but it still does it. what is the best way to dial the timing in to prevent this problem while getting the best performance out of the bike, i am ignorant to electronic ignition all i ever owned was bikes with mags. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. Keep in mind i live in Turkey on an airforce base so my resources are limited.

Answer
Your going to need a timing light to get it right on as well as a clear plug for the timing hole. If you dont have this equipment you can get it close by ear. Start the bike and let it warm up. Slowly turn the ignition until you get your highest RPMs and lock it down.
Your preignition when shutting the bike off might be due to running lean. You can also try going up one jet on the intermediate side of the carb and that might help.
Good luck and happy riding
