Motorcycle Repair: Fire, yamaha 650 maxim, fuel system components

Question
I have a 1982 Yamaha 650 maxim It will run just fine for about 8-10 min. and then just stops. No fire. Wait about 30 minutes and the process repeats. It has electronic ignition. would it be a safe assumption to think that the ignitor box is bad?

Answer
Ralph, you have to check it for spark when it quits. If you pull a plug and it has no spark, then ignition components are certainly the place to begin. Be sure that the battery is fully charged and the charging system is functioning normally. Electronic ignition parts need to see about 10v or more in order to function.

There are two pickups on the end of the crankshaft for ignition timing, but if it stops cold dead, then it probably is the control unit... $600. If EVERYTHING goes dead, then look into ignition switch problems and or connectors in the system. If it just loses spark, make sure that the KILL switch is not getting weird, while you are checking for spark/electricity in the ignition system.

Be sure that the fuel system components are all okay... petcock/filter, gas cap venting system, fuel lines, etc.
There is a filter element inside the fuel tank on the petcock, that could be contaminated/plugged up, restricting fuel flow beyond idle speeds.
