Motorcycle Repair: Tapping valve?, valve clearances, bikebandit com

Question
Hi Mark, I just bought a 1981 GS850L Suzuki. I didnt notice a tapping sound, I drove it home 10 miles or so and checked the oil it was low about a quart that's when i heard the tapping i changed the oil with the recomended oil and the tapping is still their and i think its getting louder. Is this serious or can it be a quick fix? Will it hurt to drive it with the tapping.

Answer
Hi Fred,

I suspect the tapping is from excessive valve clearances.

Excessive clearances make noise; tight or zero valve clearances causes engine damage.

Though not desirable, the tapping or ticking is not harmful. It should not be ignored either. Los

Check valve clearances and adjust as necessary.
