Motorcycle Repair: Starting problems, kawasaki ex250 ninja, change spark plug

Question
Hi Mark,

Ever since I rode through a couple of large puddles of water(heel high) My bike won't start.  Ever since the storm it has been covered outdoors.  Five days later I tried to start it and my headlights were out.  I tried to start it about 4 times and twice my headlights came on and turned off.  Horn works brake light work.  Charged battery no progress. Tried to jump with car no headlight no start.  Engine sound to want to turn.  In first gear when starting bike it pulls forward.  I'm wounding if maybe water is in the carbureter and also maybe the spark plugs got wet.  Can I drain the carbureter fuel and change spark plug with no knowledge of where these are located? Kawasaki EX250 Ninja.  Nutreul light comes on. Chain was a little rusty but I spayed it.

Answer
Hi Duane,

It is possible for water to enter the carburetors, though I doubt that has happened.

I suspect water has caused electrical shorting or is causing spark plug flash-over.

The water should evaporate within a few days. You can wipe dry parts to speed the process.

To help prevent water shorting, apply dielectric grease to all electrical connectors.

Things you can do:
1) Check fuses, replace if blown.
2) Remove and inspect spark plugs. Clean or replace as needed.
3) Carbs have a float bowl drain. Look for a screw on float bowls. Loosen screw (do not remove) and allow fuel to drain from bowls into a suitable catch. Do this with engine at room temperature and outdoors.
4) Apply dielectric grease to electrical connectors.

Avoid jumping a motorcycle from a car or truck. Auto electrical systems operate at much higher amperage levels than motorcycles. The higher amps may damage your MC's electrics. If you must jump from car, do not start car engine during jumping.

I recommend you get a copy of the service/repair manual to help you with all maintenance and repairs of your MC.

Respectfully,
