Motorcycle Repair: idling high then stalling, intermediate jet, ninja 250

Question
Hey Mike, I understand that you only do work on Harleys but nobody else is available so I understand if you don't respond.  Anyways for what it's worth I'll give you the problem that my bike is giving me.  I have a '89 Ninja 250, i've put almost a thousand miles on it in the last 5 weeks or so, it's been fun but last night we were riding and i went to stop and it stalled on me then it wouldn't start.  I can get it running if i hold the throttle open and press the starter for about 10 seconds it starts to "come to life" my idle was set perfect at 1,000rpm and now it will idle at 4,000 if i hit the throttle it will respond but then the idle will drop to 2,000 and stall.  It's really weird someone told me to run it with the gas tank open but it won't crank. You can smell gas very strong around the bike and it leaks into the engine I went to get it this morning and there was a puddle of gas under the bike it appeared to be coming out of my exhaust pipe where it's clamped on.  I just thought i'd post this to get some feed back, If you are busy or whatever it's no problem anything will help at this point.  Thanks!

Answer
If you have gas leaking into the engine you need to change the oil several times to get it out. the gas will wash the bearings of oil and you are taking a chance of one failing.
It sounds like your carb or carbs, not sure how many you have, is leaking. The float is probably stuck. Also, if the bike will not idle that is an indication that the intermediate jet is plugged with dirt and needs to be cleaned out.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
