Motorcycle Repair: Honda CL90 neutral switch not working, honda cl90, copper piece

Question
My neutral switch doesn't work in my 1969 CL90 . I have tested the bulb and it works fine. There is a closed cicuit from the switch inside the engine to earth when neutral is selected (is that correct?). Can you tell me how it should work or any other tests I could do? Thanks. David

Answer
David, go to http://www.powersportspro.com/partsfish/
signup and log in. Select HONDA then ATV, then ATC90, then GEARSHIFT to see the small neutral switch contact piece on the end of the shift drum.
I couldn't find any real good illustrations of the neutral switch, however, it is placed inside a hole in the crankcase, so that when the shift drum moves into neutral, the copper piece will appear in the hole where the neutral switch contact is located. The end of the switch contacts the copper piece and completes the ground circuit for the neutral light bulb.

In troubleshooting, look for power to the bulb and back out again headed towards the neutral switch. You can ground the neutral light switch wire to test the circuit using a spare piece of wire or against a grounded portion of the headlight case (green wires should be ground). If all is in order, then you will have to follow the green/red spiral neutral wire down to the crankcase and into the engine.

As I recall you will have to pull the back drive chain cover to access the switch and wire. Remove the wire from the switch contact and ground it to the engine to test the circuit to that point. If okay, then either the switch contact is bad internally or the shift drum contact has broken off inside. The switch is just held in place with an o-ring and should come right out by hand. Unfortunatly the whole motor has to come apart to fix the shift drum contact problem...
