Motorcycle Repair: Throttle free play, honda vt600, throttle cables

Just bought used '94 Honda VT600. Has about 1/2" of throttle free play before carbs engauges.  The cable appears to be tight.  How to fix this problem.  Thank you.

Throttle cables have adjustments at the throttle housing and at the carburetor body. Loosen the locknut on the cable adjuster, set cable tension and tighten cable adjuster locknut. Some models may have a cable adjustment in the middle of the cable.
