Cadillac Repair: Computer codes, factory service manuals, electrical schematics

Question
How do I access computer codes on my 1989 Cad eldorado. I frequently get the message "Cooling fan fault" and I understand I must access computer codes to determine what area of the system has the problem.
I can't afford the dealers guessing game and high cost.  Right off the bat he says it will cost $100. to diagnose the problem and I will probably have to replace the onboard computer for about $300. parts plus labor.  I don't have much confidence in his honesty & ability to get it right the first time.

Answer
Most dealerships do charge a 1 hour diagnostic fee and most have a labor rate of $100.00 per hour.

Even with the sequence to access the codes, You will need the OEM factory service manuals to perform the test procedures which are quite lengthy.

From looking at the electrical schematic, You could have a problem with the:

1. BCM.

2. cooling fan relay.

3. cooling fan control module.

4. One or both cooling fans.

5. an open fusible link.

6. approx 20 different wire connections.

7. A shorted or open diode.

8. A power choke short or open circuit.

9. an open ground circuit.
