Motorcycle Repair: 91 fxrs forks, fork sliders, rocker boxes


Question
what is the procedure for replacing fork sliders and also where can i obtain a book that containsmore information a details about doing repairs. i have a 91 fxrs and it has been setting in the garage for two years without being run and i am in the middle of replacing old wiring and and parts that may have surface rust. one more question: they say that the rear rocker boxes can be removed without removing the engine but i'm having problems reaching the rear rocker box bolt because it is so close to the frame.any ideas?
sorry about number of questions but it isn't easy finding expert that is available.

You can get a book on your bike from any dealer that sells V-Twin products. They still have repair manuals for your bike.
As to the forks. Remove the wheel and fender. Drain the fork oil. Remove the top nut and the pinch bolts and slide the fork out of the triple trees. Looking at the underside of the fork you will see an allen head bolt. It is metric. Remove it and the bottom of the fork will slide out of the sliders.
Removing the rear rocker box is a bear. I cant remember on that model, but I think there is a hole in the frame so you can get to the one bolt and the front mount,look to see if its on a rubber mount, has to be removed to let the motor drop down. I use a allen wrench that I have shortened to get to it then I use pliers to turn it. Its a close fit but it can be done.
