Motorcycle Repair: Harley not charging, volt meter, meter test

New high output battery this year.. Will run for about 100 miles and then the bike will not start.. How does one go about checking the charging system for this before I go about replacing expensive parts.. thanks.. Tim

First make sure you have a good battery. Check the cells to make sure there is water in them. Charge the battery. Start the bike and with a volt meter at the battery, check the voltage at around 1500-2000 RPM. You should be showing around 13.5 volts. If not then either your stator or regulator is bad. You can test your stator with an OHM meter. Unplug it from the regulator. Test for ground at the plug and the motor. If it passes then you need a AC volt meter. Start the bike and using the AC volt meter, test how much voltage you are getting out of the stator. At 2000 RPM you should be getting around 60 volts. If not then the stator is bad. If the stators tests fine then the regulator is bad.
