Motorcycle Repair: Installing Rockers and rocker shaft, hydraulic lifter, rocker shaft

Question
Hi Mike, I'm still trying to get my rocker covers back on my 99 FatBoy but I'm having trouble with the rockers and rocker shaft.

How do I get the push rod to go down enough to get the rocker lined up for the rocker shaft?
Is there a way to collapse the hydraulic lifter?
   Thanks again, Jack Parsons.

Answer
When you install the rocker cover start all the bolts in it loosly to make sure you have the gasket lined up. Then, in a cross pattern, work the 1/2 inch bolts down. This will collapse the lifters. After you have all the bolts tightened and the top covers on what you need to do is make sure they are collapsed so you dont hit a valve on a piston. To do this remove the spark plugs, jack the rear wheel off the ground and put the bike in 5th geat. Starting with the front exhaust, rotate the wheel until you see the pushrod extend or open the valve. Now let the bike sit for around 15 minutes and this will bleed the lifter. Do this for each valve and you are good to go.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
